A new study by DEKRA and the market research institute Ipsos shows that many cyclists in Germany perceive road traffic as unsafe. Especially in cities, many people feel uneasy, which often turns cycling into a tense affair.

According to the survey, 41% of respondents feel unsafe or even very unsafe in urban traffic - a figure that has actually risen slightly since the last survey. On country roads, 34 percent of cyclists also feel very unsafe. Many see the inadequate cycling infrastructure as the main problem. An improvement in cycle paths and more decoupling from car traffic are among the most frequent demands of those surveyed.

Action is therefore needed to improve the safety situation for cyclists in Germany. But how can cyclists themselves actively contribute to safer everyday traffic? Especially with the pedelec, better known as an e-bike, which is becoming increasingly popular, there are a number of behaviors and precautions that can increase safety in traffic.

Increase your own safety

– Good preparation and check of the bike

Thorough preparation is the first step towards greater safety on the road. A well-maintained bike is essential in order to be prepared for all eventualities.

Regular maintenance

A technically flawless bike significantly reduces the risk of accidents. Brakes, tires, chain and lights should be checked regularly for function and wear. The battery is a particularly important factor for e-bikes - a regular check of the battery and its charging capacity ensures safety and prevents unwanted incidents.

Lighting and visibility

Functioning lights are essential, especially in the darker months of the year and in bad weather. Reflectors on tires, pedals and clothing make cyclists more visible. A high-visibility vest or reflective accessories can also help drivers and other road users to recognize cyclists earlier and better.

Drive with foresight and recognize dangers early on

Anticipatory driving and a defensive attitude towards other road users help to avoid dangerous situations. Active awareness of your surroundings is crucial, especially in dense city traffic and on busy country roads.

Keep your distance

Adequate distance from other road users, especially cars, provides safety and creates space to react. When overtaking parked cars, you should always be aware of the risk of doors opening - the so-called “dooring effect” is a frequent cause of accidents.

Defensive driving style

Faster and more powerful e-bikes often tempt you to increase your speed. A defensive riding style helps you to keep an overview even at higher speeds. Especially at junctions and traffic circles, it is advisable to reduce your speed and keep a close eye on the traffic situation.

Seek eye contact

Especially at junctions or in confusing situations, it can be helpful to make eye contact with motorists. In this way, you can see whether the driver has actually noticed the cyclist.

Choosing the right equipment

The right equipment significantly improves safety and comfort when cycling. In addition to the bicycle helmet, which can prevent serious head injuries in the event of an accident, there are other items of equipment that prove to be useful.

Bicycle helmet

Even though wearing a helmet is not mandatory for adults in Germany, safety experts strongly recommend it, especially on an e-bike. In the event of an accident, the helmet protects the head and can prevent serious injuries. You can also read our blog post “Safety on your mind: why a bicycle helmet is a must when cycling”

Protective equipment for e-bike riders

As e-bikes reach higher speeds than normal bikes, additional protective equipment is advisable. Protective vests or protectors on the knees and elbows can reduce injuries in the event of a fall.

Mirrors and consideration

A rear-view mirror on the handlebars increases visibility, especially on busy roads. Especially when turning or changing lanes, the rear-view mirror can help you keep an eye on what is happening on the road.

Actively shaping traffic

- Awareness of your own position in road traffic

As a cyclist, it is important to be aware of your own role in traffic and to actively shape it. Clear and unambiguous positioning on the road and open communication with other road users can help to avoid dangerous situations.

Use the center of the lane

In many situations, it is safer to ride in the middle of the road. Particularly on narrow roads or in blind spots, cyclists can be seen more easily thanks to the central position.

Clear hand signals

Clear hand signals, especially when turning, are essential. They give other road users clear indications of the planned change of direction and reduce the risk of misunderstandings.

Eye contact and communication

In addition to making eye contact with other road users, it sometimes helps to make your intentions clear through gestures or a brief agreement.

Recognize dangers early and strengthen your own protection

Every cyclist should be aware of the dangers of road traffic and actively prepare for them. It is important to ride attentively and be aware of potential danger spots, such as junctions, traffic lights or unclear road sections.

Intersections and traffic circles

Intersections and traffic circles in particular are frequent accident sites for cyclists. Special care is required here. Reduced speed and open attention for all sides are the safest approaches here.

Observe the blind spot

The “blind spot” is one of the greatest sources of danger for cyclists, especially with trucks and buses. It is advisable not to enter the blind spot of these vehicles and to always pay attention to their movements.

Using traffic lights and crosswalks correctly

Anyone on a bicycle should adhere to the traffic light phases and use crosswalks correctly. At crosswalks in particular, it is important not to proceed until you are sure that other road users have noticed the cyclist.

More safety starts with each individual

The results of the DEKRA study make it clear that a considerable proportion of cyclists in Germany perceive the traffic situation as unsafe. While the call for better cycling infrastructure is justified, the right riding style, the right equipment and defensive behavior can also make a significant contribution to your own safety. Pedelec riders in particular should be aware of their high speed and ride more carefully accordingly.

Through a combination of preventive behavior, good equipment and an anticipatory riding style, cyclists themselves can actively contribute to safe traffic. This will increase their confidence in cycling and make it more enjoyable - an important step on the road to a safer future.
